What is a fitness to drive assessment?

Traffic medicine and traffic psychology assessments of fitness to drive may ONLY be carried out by professionals who have been trained for this purpose (basic and advanced training), i.e.

level 4 physicians, specialist in Traffic Medicine according to the Swiss Society of Legal Medicine - SSML

psychologists that are specialist in traffic psychology according to the Swiss Society of Psychology FSP.

Who are level 4 physicians?

The title of level 4 specialist in traffic medicine SSML is awarded by the Swiss Society of Legal Medicine.

What is the basis for a medical assessment of fitness to drive carried out by a level 4 physician?

The medical assessment of fitness to drive carried out by a level 4 physician is based on the Swiss laws as well as on the recommendations of the Swiss Society of Lorensic Medicine and the guidelines of the various specialist medical societies.

Are the costs of the assessment reimbursed by the insurance company?

The costs of the assessment are borne by the person being assessed. The report is then forwarded directly to the cantonal authority.

What does it take to qualify as a level 4 physician?

To qualify for level 4, physicians must have the title of specialist in traffic medicine according to the Swiss Society of Legal Medicine - SSML.

When is a level 4 doctor called in?

A qualified level 4 physicians is called in whenever there is any doubt about medical fitness to drive, in particular 

  • following a medical examination by a level 1, level 2 or level 3 physician,
  • driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

Can a level 4 physician request "on-road driving test" following a level 4 medical examination, if there are still doubts about fitness to drive?

YES, a level 4 doctor can request “on-road driving test” following a level 4 medical examination, if there are still doubts about fitness to drive.

Article 5j of the OAC stipulates that if the result of an examination raises doubts, a level 4-recognized physician may ask the cantonal authority to require on-road driving test to be carried out with the participation of a level 4-recognized physician and a traffic expert.
